YouTube: "TIME" Best Invention of The Year for 2006

In the past 12 months, thousands of ordinary people have become famous. Famous people have been embarrassed. YouTube created a new way for millions of people to entertain, educate, shock, rock and grok one another on a scale we've never seen before. That's why it's Time's Invention of the Year for 2006.

YouToBe, Founded in February 14th, 2005, YouTube is a consumer media company for people to watch and share original videos worldwide through a Web experience. YouTube is a place for people to engage in new ways with video by sharing, commenting on, and viewing videos. YouTube originally started as a personal video sharing service, and has grown into an entertainment destination with people watching more than 70 million videos on the site daily.

With YouTube, people can:

  • Upload, tag and share videos worldwide
  • Browse millions of original videos uploaded by community members
  • Find, join and create video groups to connect with people who have similar interests
  • Customize the experience by subscribing to member videos, saving favorites, and creating playlists
  • Integrate YouTube videos on websites using video embeds or APIs
  • Make videos public or private—users can elect to broadcast their videos publicly or share them privately with friends and family upon upload
YouTube is building a community that is highly motivated to watch and share videos. The service is free for everyone.

YouTube, which was purchased for $1.65 billion last month by Google, has become the place to go on the Internet to see crazy things from the world of sports. The clips are not necessarily easy to find - you have to know what you're looking for - but once something becomes a hit, it spreads to other Web sites, thanks to an interface that allows bloggers to post YouTube videos on their own sites with ease.

YouTube partnerships with Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and CBS would let their artists' music and videos be included in original content posted on YouTube's site.

The media groups will authorize the use of their copyright-protected content through three separate revenue deals with YouTube.

Very little explanation is needed for the first movement of Beethoven's venerable Fifth Symphony.
